Yes, I do feel better

We went to see Michael Nyman and David McAlmont tonight, the opening gig of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. These two maestros collaborated last year on an album in which McAlmont wrote songs from stories culled from newspapers, for example one called City of Turin is about the fates and difficulties of streetwalkers in that city. The first half was just Nyman and his orchestra and was rather fine; David McAlmont came out for the second half and did the album. He has a fabulous voice, a great suit, and a beautiful broach, shirt and tie, plus a frame built for wearing clothes, tremendous lithe posture, and preposterously long fingers. The songs didn’t always work, though, and I longed to see him do this sensational kiss off song, or any other real soul song, come to that:

    I saw yer man a long time ago at the astoria, he had rare presence. I ve not seen nyman but his piano music is annoying to play. From my hut in a cold open field.
