A meme is a cultural gene (‘a postulated unit of ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena,’ it says here).
This clip of film from the movie Downfall is apparently the most popular internet parody meme in the world. I’ve received it by email a few times in various forms, the relegation of Sheffield United being my favourite, not least because a) it makes the case that Hitler would have supported Sheffield United, which is only totally obvious once it’s been pointed out; and b) because of the subsequent amount of weeping and wailing that Sheffield United did about ‘the Carlos Tevez affair’, when the much more blatant fact of the matter is that they were relegated because they couldn’t hold out for a point at home to Wigan on the final day. Wigan, I ask you.
I’ve never seen Downfall. It looks as if it could be quite good.
