The Rancid Heart of Professional Sport;

the X-factorisation of pop; the bankrupt soul of modern art; the death of the author. All this and more. Some other day. (Though do watch Roy Keane on Ireland). For now, a recipe:

Olde English Apple and Pear Pie

It’s very, very simple. Take a few apples, peel & core. Same for a couple of pears. Fry the apples gently in butter in a medium saucepan for a couple of minutes. Add the juice of a lemon, a good shake of cinnamon and a handful of brown sugar. Add the pears and a few sultanas. Throw in a small schooner of sherry and some water – enough to make a syrup. Poach for about ten minutes, tops. Pour into a pie dish, roll out the puff pasty and bake about 20/25 minutes. (Alternatively do a crumble top). Serve with the usual things, cream, vanilla ice-cream, Greek-style yoghurt, but for the best effect go custard.

    Send me a couple of slices via e-mail, please. ;)

    “Go custard!” Brilliant.

    Sorry Calvininjax, too late . . .

    Sounds lovely the kids and I will give it a whirl. The trouble lies with the sherry. I would then be forced to drink the rest.

    Crisp oloroso and roasted almonds…

    There’s nothing illegal about that …

    The whole bottle…

    That’s it. I have to head to the dreaded supermarket and that may as well be on the list.

    Bit worried about the lack of a schooner – guess we can muddle through.

    Schooner was just a fancy old word that popped into my head. Use a glug : )

    Any luck today?

    I was out of the Scoop 6 on the first leg as usual…

    Just watching Plum Pudding @ Lingfield – last chance saloon where they probably all sup sweet sherry from a schooner.

    Karabak the only other glimmer of hope on my slip!

    Didn’t stay – read that race two thirds right. Off to buy sherry to drown some apples.
