Number One!

A few years ago my son Jack and his friend Archie were determined that Norwich should see some grime music. They promoted a night, persuading the band Roll Deep’s management that if they would come up to Norwich then they would fill a venue, which they did: they flyered everywhere even as far away as Ipswich [:)] and hundreds of teenagers rammed a riverside bar on a Monday night in Norwich. It was amazing. Next they got Dizzee Rascal up to a different Waterfront venue. Then they found Tinchy Styder on MySpace, met him in an underpass in Hackney, persuaded him that they were the boys to take him to the top, got a bank loan, cadged a few quid from eveyrone they could, made a company called Takeover Entertainments and put out the album Star in the Hood and a t-shirt to go with it. Tinchy was nominated best newcomer on the Mobos a couple of years back. The boys held negotiations with several major record labels before doing a deal with Island (Universal), to publish & distribute Tinchy’s stuff while they still maintained his management and merchandise rights. Today they went to No 1 with a song called Number One (Tinchy Styder Ft N-Dubz). Archie, Jack and Tinchy are all twenty year-olds. They have done good and we are proud of them. Flee! as we say, a most versatile word which means: Hello, Goodbye, and Ace!

Well, Flee! indeed. Very well done to Jack, Archie and Tinchy: spot your opportunity and go for it…

“they flyered everywhere even as far away as Ipswich”

That was the impressive bit for me. Two young lads getting off their arses and actually going out and doing that is the diffference between failure and success. Far too many youngsters sit at home waiting for an opportunity. That isn’t the way it works. Unless you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth then the only way to success is to seize an opportunity and then work your asses off to build on it. These boys did that and for that they have not only my congratulations but also my absolute respec’ man.

    OS doffs old cap.

If I have to wait as long as ST has for his two for the boys then I’ll pass because you’ll be reading your prose at my funeral before I get it. I can see the headlines now – Oldstokie-in-the-Hood goes up in smoke. 😉

BTW, George has set you a challenge on his blog.
