The difference between the UK and the USA

They had the Jackson 5, we had these guys. Sweet Sensation: sweet suits, sweet song, sensational strides and one slick pair of Superfly shades. The lead vocal is Marcel King, the impresario is Tony Hatch, they hailed from the Eastside, Manchester, and their breakthrough came on New Faces (that’s X-Factor in prehistoric times, young reader).

Incredible. After hearing that song many times on the wireless over the years, that’s the first time I’ve seen footage of the band. Beige? Flares? So wrong. That’s the Morris Ital of outfits, although given the era I suppose I should be saying Austin Maxi.

But not as bad as the costumes and choreography of this 1971 outing by The Tams.

Check out the middle one of the three backing singers. His timing is so out he mysteriously disappears with about 30 seconds left!! As Mark Radcliffe once said… The Crystal Palace Supporters Club from 1971. This was the month after I was born!

They hailed from Whalley Range, Manchester.

I used to see members of the group on the streets and in local shops during my student days.

    Where are they now?

Just looked on wikipedia and it appears two of them, including Marcel King, are dead.

Sad isn’t it. At least they left this rather lovely pop song behind.

And I think Purely By Coincidence was alright too.

Have a look at Andy’s Tams link. The Palace Hells Angels’ jump suits and the ‘formation’ dancing are quite remarkabul.
