Sean Scully

It’s art school final degree show season. I haven’t been down to the Norwich School of Art yet, where I was once a student. It is soon to be snappily retitled the Norwich University College of the Arts, since it has been given the right to validate its own degrees. There’s a name designed by committee if ever I saw one.

Meanwhile this a work by one of my favourite painters. He’s a brilliant colour handler who loves uniformity while at the same time recognizing that not all rectangles are the same. Scully was born in Dublin. ‘I remember growing up in Ireland and everything being chequered, even the fields and the people,’ he says.

Swiss Tony would love that on his wall…along with your own unique materpiece, of course.

‘materpice should read ‘masterpiece’. ‘materpiece’ sounds too much like the RE to not make this clear. 😉
